After graduating in June 2004, I moved to Philadelphia to be a design associate at Public Interest GRFX. Public Interest GRFX is the in house design team for a national network of non profit organizations under the Fund for Public Interest Research. I make materials (brochures, posters, Web sites) for social/environmental justice groups all over the country such as CALPIRG, Environment Maine, Environmenatal Action, etc. It is a great opportunity to combine my love of art and design with my passions for social justice activism.

I'm still living in San Diego and loving it! After designing for my company for about two and a half years, I moved on to the position of Brand Manager for ZANheadgear & RAM. Now, not only do I get to design some of the products and packaging, but I get to develop our marketing strategies and I have full control over the product line. In November, I traveled to Japan, China & Hong Kong to meet with vendors and source new opportunities. This position also involves a lot of traveling in the U.S. too, which is awesome.

Howdy! I'm in grad school down in San Diego. Ceramic arts is my concentration and I am enjoying it. My work has progressed nicely and will continue to in the future. I'm very glad I decided to continue but at the same time I would really like to be done with school and settle in somewhere. Hope you're all doing well.

After graduation (June 04), I took a needed break, visited Japan and completed a graphic design internship in Amsterdam. Great people, very cool job and very, very cool city. My connection there will continue. I am joining Chiaki, my fiancé, and will be living indefinitely in Japan, teaching English at first. Design is on the horizon and I am very excited about my options. Demo, nihongowa muzukashi desu ne.

Since graduation, I took a job with Square Peg Design, an Environmental Graphics firm located in Emeryville, just outside of San Francisco. It is a blend of Architecture and Graphic Design, and I couldn't be happier. Besides Square Peg, along with fellow Cal Poly students Christopher Harris and Ryan LaBarre, we have started Reywire Design. Usability is the key at Reywire, and this Art & Design website is a testament to that. Finally the Department can maintain their own website, without the need for someone with a coding background. We have completed projects in Logo Design, Business papers, promotional pieces, Flash-based web design, ecommerce websites, database backends, custom PHP online apps... and many more projects are still in the works!

I'm currently living in San Diego and splitting my time between freelance design work and teaching at San Diego State University, where I coordinate the Graphic Design Internship program and teach Typography, Brand Identity, etc. I'm also on the board with AIGA San Diego, which has been great. I've got a few side projects in the works and hope to build those with time. Good to hear what everyone is up to.

I started my career as a digital media designer for Frog Design in San Francisco. At Frog, I engaged primarily in UI and interactive design for a number of well known clients. I recently took a design position at the House of Blues corporate office in Hollywood. Here I am heavily involved in design work for the music industry including poster design, package/cd design, billboard design, signage/product/merchandise/tshirt design, and motion graphics. HOB offers an array of other exciting design opportunities, including casino design and even guitar design! In my spare time I'm involved in freelance projects including real estate investment and a short film I'm collaborating on with other industry professionals. Recent work is coming to my site soon!

What up y'all! After graduating last year I started working as a graphic designer for a small Santa Barbara design studio called Buffalo Brothers Studios. I worked there on various things; t-shirt designs, brochures, logos/identity, etc. After six months I decided to move on and am currently working as a graphic designer at Global Brand Marketing, Inc. (GBMI) in Santa Barbara. They design, develop and market brands like Diesel, Pony, XOXO, Nautica and so forth. A lot of the work is print/marketing driven. Perks are good... Good hearing about all you!

I found it interesting that after moving up to San Francisco, where the major art centers are the Academy and CCA, I slowly began to realize that Cal Poly holds an 'underground reputation' (for lack of better words) for producing quality thinkers in the art/design related fields. After moving to the Bay Area I began freelancing for Skaggs Design and Hunt-Weber-Clark Associates, as well as kept my own clients under RedSpike Design. In mid-October I began contracting for Weymouth Design and I am now on staff as both a graphic designer and photographer. If I learned anything, it's to be active in the professinal clubs and keep the friends you graduated with--they will save your life when you least expect it.

After graduation I hadn't planned on leaving SLO anytime soon until I was brought to the attention of a job at Apple, assisting the art buyers and doing in house photo. But really I just make binders, and binder libraries. They say I'm the best they've seen.

Life is full of random art jobs that keep one creative and in the thick of things. I have had my first experience with catalog photography and sad to say ended sooner than expected. As of now I am doing installer/prep work for Ace Gallery in Los Angeles and studying the work I see. While in the gallery I was an artist assistant for Tara Donovan for a month and gained much inspiration. with time that I have off I am exploring "division" two contrasting bodies and what makes them, and what is in between them. Studying Tara's work I have been bringing in different materials to experiment with. I am in the process of getting together a new body of work and exhibiting.

After graduation my focus initially was on editorial and commercial work, as seen on my site www.heidischawel.com. However, I soon switched my focus over to photographing weddings and portraits- as on my site www.heidiophoto.com. I enjoy working from home, photographing at beautiful local sites, and meeting a variety of people. I'm also getting married in August '09 to my college sweetheart- Albert- so life's pretty exciting lately.
